Apple’s Mixed Reality headset launch could affect Tim Cook’s ‘legacy’: Mark Gurman
Apple’s WWDC 2023 special event will take place next month – June 5 – and during the event, the tech giant is expected to unveil an AR/MR headset for the first time alongside the xrOS operating system. Now, ahead of the rumored reveal, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has said that this release will define Tim Cook’s legacy as CEO, and Apple diverged from the original vision.
Gurman claims in a Bloomberg Businessweek newsletter that when Tim Cook launches the mixed reality headset, he aims to recreate the same vibe that Apple has been able to create with its other products, such as phones, headphones, music players and smartwatches.
Citing sources familiar with the development process, Gurman claims that the headset presented by Cook during WWDC 2023 has “diverged far from the original vision” during seven years of development. What started out as “unobtrusive glasses that can be worn all day” has turned into headphones that “look like ski goggles and require a separate battery.”
The release is being called one of Tim Cook’s “last big swings as Apple CEO” and has the power to impact his legacy. “For Apple, it’s the culmination of a multibillion-dollar development process, and some inside the company have described it as a possible foundation for the post-iPhone era,” Gurman said.
The headset is expected to cost around $3,000 and may come with Apple’s xrOS software, which it recently trademarked with Shell in New Zealand.
